Created in His Image (1/20/22)
Mark Barbee

From Genesis on, we understand that God created man in His image. Our spirit, intellect, emotions, etc. are similar to His. But sin mars the Creator’s work. There is a precious, holy moment when a human sperm and egg unite to form a new human being. At that moment, God gives a unique soul and a unique DNA that determines all the characteristics of that person physically and emotionally. During the months in the womb, the only thing that’s added is physical development and nutrition. After nine months or so, that person comes into our world.

But God knows that person in the womb. Several Scriptures support this. Psalm 139:13 is a classic passage:

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Now those thoughts are enough to blow your mind! God knows and cares for each one of us beginning in our mother’s womb!

Later, God told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart.” Think of those profound words—the same is true for each of us! Ultimately we belong to God. We are entrusted to earthly parents. Unfortunately, through ignorance and propaganda, millions of women have ended the lives of some 60 million babies in the last 50 years in our country alone. This is sad news, even though those millions have met God and will find their destiny in the next world.

We can repent as a people and for our nation. We can realize that not everything that is legal is right. The Court was wrong in 1856 when it said that blacks were not fully human with equal rights. That was settled within ten years. The Court was wrong again in 1973 when it created the right to abortion out of thin air: babies are not fully human with equal rights. We can pray that the wrong of the 1973 Supreme Court decision will be made right by the Supreme Court of 2022. At least let them follow the Constitution, where the most fundamental right is the Right to Life!

Beyond the Court, let America be awakened to Life. I suspect that much of the death around us over the last half century is a judgment from the Almighty, the Righteous Judge of the Universe against those who ignore His Word; which should be the last word. In fact, it will be the last word!

Lord, this is a week in which we remember the terrible tragedy of abortion. All other tragedies pale in comparison to what has taken place. Abortion is the root cause of many other evils in our society, including the sexual revolution and many other corrupt practices. We repent where we have failed to speak up. But we also thank you for tireless warriors who have spoken and are speaking up over these decades. Bless those who march for life this week. Keep them safe in your care.

We thank you that precious human souls will still find life with you, despite their earthly lives being snuffed out. We thank you for forgiveness for those who have had any part in abortion, because they can come to you and be forgiven. We thank you for those who have awakened and become advocates for life. May many more doctors and nurses quit abortion clinics and refuse to go along with the lies that are perpetrated in the name of human autonomy. May we find life, both physical and spiritual in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
