Crossroads of Truth (2/10/22)
Mark Barbee

Today we are at a crossroads of truth in our nation. But the Bible is clear that this has happened before, with ancient Israel. While we may think we are a lot more clever and advanced than the ancient nation of Israel, we would be wrong. Human nature has not changed. Neither has God and His Truth.

The prophet Isaiah speaks of truth when he writes God’s words in about 700 B. C. It’s as though God were on the witness stand in chapters 43-45. He reminds Israel that He is the only truth. In 45:18 and 19 he reminds them that “I am the LORD and there is no other… I, the LORD, speak the truth, I declare what is right.” Israel had to learn the hard way, as so many nations have over the centuries.

By the time of Jeremiah, around 600 B.C., the situation was very much like ours today: “This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished: it has vanished from their lips.” Jeremiah 7:28. Have you had trouble lately knowing who to believe? Many institutions have failed us in the last few years. They have left the truth of God to substitute other “truth.” The problem is, their truth changes week to week and month to month. People regularly lie about what they said in the past and the media covers for them.

We have a lot of uninformed opinion masquerading as “truth”. But One came who was himself Truth. Jesus came bringing God’s truth and affirming God’s laws. He re-affirmed the Ten Commandments which America has rejected for fifty years. He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” John 14:6. He told Pilate that he had come to testify to the truth. John 18:37 He prayed for all believers when he said, “Sanctify them in the truth, your word is truth.” John 17:17

Later, Paul summarized the situation when he said that “men suppress the truth by their wickedness” (Romans 1:18) and “exchanged the truth of God for a lie.” (25) This has not changed either.

We may have new philosophies that dress up lies, but they really are as old as mankind. Satan has always opposed God’s truth and loves to assist man in his rebellion against the Creator. We can see the disaster that has come from the current philosophy of “wokeness” which is based on no discernible truth. It is more like a mob mentality. Tear it all down! But Satan doesn’t care if it’s a false religion, or philosophy, or half-truths (the most dangerous).

America today has turned away from God’s guiding principles and so we have no ultimate source of truth. But God once for all revealed truth in his Son and left us a written record of his life, death and resurrection. All other so-called truths fall short of God’s beautiful, perfect plan.

Since we are at a crossroads, all we can do is turn back to find where we got off the track. We need to turn back to God and the principles our nation was founded upon. Only then will we find truth. Any other choices before us will lead to disaster. “God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” II Peter 3:9

Lord, thank you that you are still at work in this nation. Your work may be below the radar right now, but we know there are still a large percentage of Christians in this nation. Perhaps we are the new minority, but with you on our side, we can be victorious. Our confidence is not in men, though. Only you can bring us through a time of chaos and bring peace. It will not be peace in the society so much as peace in us as individuals.

Lord, thank you that there are still many voices advocating for truth that is above culture and politics. Thank you that in your Word we find truth for all seasons and needs in our lives.

Lord, we continue to pray that Christ be lifted up and draw all men to him, for truly he is the way, the truth and the life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
